Interview: a different image of Iran
The Japanese film site Cinemarche interviewed Mani Nickpour after AHRIMAN: Death Before Dying screened at Kanazawa Film Festival 2023. 日本語はこちら ↓
What the interview is about
AHRIMAN: Death Before Dying was one of the films in “Choice of Kanazawa”, the first international section of Kanazawa Film Festival 2023. In the interview with writer Nobi Kawai, Mani talks about:
- Why Zoroastrian mythology. The ancient religion of Iran was a way to show audiences an Iran that is very different from the image of conflict and crisis they usually see in films.
- The masks of the gods. Spenta Mainyu’s mask works like a mirror, so whoever looks at it faces their own dark side; Ahriman’s mask is designed as a shattered mirror. Mani made the costumes himself, partly on a sewing machine.
- How it started. At seven he acted in a film directed by his father, Saeid Nickpour, and the crew treated him as one of the filmmakers. That is when he decided to become a director.
- Teaching. Teaching filmmaking and telling stories through film are, for him, one and the same job.
- Part one and part two. Death Before Dying raises the questions; the second part brings the answers.
The film is meant as an introduction to Zoroastrian culture, but above all as fantasy entertainment that works with or without any background knowledge.

映画『アーリマン：デス・ビフォア・ダイング』は、カナザワ映画祭2023の初の海外映画部門「Choice of Kanazawa」で上映されました。映画サイト「シネマルシェ」の河合のびさんによるインタビューで、マニ・ニックプール監督は次のことについて語っています。
- なぜゾロアスター教なのか。古代イランの宗教や文化を描くことで、映画でよく描かれる現代のイランとは異なるイメージを知ってもらうきっかけを作りたかったこと。
- 神々のマスク。スプンタ・マンユのマスクは鏡のようになっていて、見た者は自分の悪しき面と向き合うことになる。アーリマンのマスクは「バラバラに割られた鏡」のデザイン。衣装もミシンを使って自分で制作したこと。
- 映画監督を志したきっかけ。7歳のとき、父サイード・ニックプールが監督する映画に出演し、撮影現場で「映画の作り手の一人」として接してもらえたこと。
- 教えること。映画制作を教えることと、映画を通じて人々に伝えることは、一つの仕事としてつながっていること。
- Part.1からPart.2へ。本作が「問題提起」、続編が「解決」となること。
ゾロアスター教の知識がある方もない方も楽しめる、エンターテインメントとしてのファンタジー作品です。
